OpenMoko, maker of the Neo mobile Linux phone, has opened the design of the hardware for customization and is providing free access to the CAD files for developers to use. The source code for the OpenMoko platform is already free. OpenMoko placed the CAD files on its site and is encouraging designers to create their own versions of the hardware for the Neo platform. The files are available under a ShareAlike Creative Commons license, and OpenMoko hopes to foster a community of designers who will share ideas about open source design.
